Paediatric Infectious Diseases Clinic

The Paediatric Infectious Diseases Clinic is a specialized service for the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents who have been exposed to or infected with an infectious disease. It is made up of an experienced team of infectious disease experts and advanced practice nurses, with access to allied health professionals. We provide family-centred, evidence-based care from consultation and testing to highly complex interdisciplinary chronic care treatment management. 

Clinics include General Infectious Diseases, Congenital Infectious Diseases, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Tuberculosis and Travel Medicine.

Directions: 

Registration takes place in the Infectious Diseases Clinic in Clinic 7 on the Main Floor of the Black Wing. If coming in through the 555 University Avenue entrance, turn right to get to Clinic 7. If coming from the Atrium, walk down Main Street until Shoppers Drug Mart and turn left.   

The Paediatric Infectious Diseases Clinic is often quite busy, with several different clinics running at the same time. Patient safety is a priority at SickKids and preventing infections is paramount in our clinic. We screen families for communicable illnesses and take precautions as needed to ensure everyone’s safety. We provide hand sanitizer throughout the hospital for you to clean your hands. 

We discourage patients and family members from coming to clinic if they are unwell. If you or your child happen to be sick with cough, cold or fever when you are here, please inform the clerk immediately at registration. You will be asked to clean your hands and wear a mask, and try to stay away from other patients and families to prevent possible transmission to others, including your health-care providers. Your health-care providers will be cleaning their hands before they touch your child. If you don’t see them do this, it’s ok to ask them to.   

As one of the teaching hospitals affiliated with the University of Toronto, SickKids trains doctors, nurses and other health-care professionals, so you will meet several different members of the health-care team while in clinic. As a result, this may mean that a clinic visit may take longer to complete.

Please be prepared to be here for the better part of the morning. We suggest that you bring extra diapers, feedings for babies and a favourite toy for your child. During your clinic visit you may be required to travel to other parts of the hospital for additional tests, such as X-rays or blood work. A staff member or volunteer will assist you getting there.
