Stanley Zlotkin appointed to Order of Ontario for contribution and leadership in global child health

Stanley Zlotkin has been appointed to the Order of Ontario for his work and leadership in global child health. The Order of Ontario is the province's highest official honour.

Dr. Stanley Zlotkin, Chief of the Centre for Global Child Health and Senior Scientist in the Research Institute at SickKids, has been appointed to the Order of Ontario for his work and leadership in global child health. The announcement was made by the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and Chancellor of the Order of Ontario, on Jan. 13.

The Order of Ontario is the province's highest official honour. It is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated excellence and achievement in any field benefiting the people of Ontario or anywhere in the world. Dr. Zlotkin, along with his fellow appointees, will be honoured at the investiture ceremony today, January 20th.

Dr. Zlotkin is a respected leader in both the medical and research community. He is internationally renowned for his work in improving the lives of millions of children who live in resource-poor areas of the world and suffer from serious nutritional deficiencies.

Of the appointment, Dr. Zlotkin states, “It really is a true honour to be recognized by a country and province that I truly hold in such high esteem. My travels have allowed me the perspective to honestly say that. My grandparents came to Ontario is 1903, my parents were both born in Toronto and I have lived in Ontario for most of my life, so being recognized by the province with the Order of Ontario is very meaningful for me”.

Through his program, the Sprinkles Global Health Initiative at SickKids, Dr. Zlotkin has focused his research and advocacy to control micronutrient malnutrition in children. Along with his research team, Zlotkin developed Sprinkles, small sachets that contain a blend of micronutrient powders. The powder can easily be sprinkled onto foods prepared in the home and instantly fortify and control micronutrient deficiencies.

Dr. Zlotkin began working at SickKids as clinician-nutritionist and research scientist in 1980 before becoming Head of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition and Medical Director of Nutrition Support at the hospital.

He was then appointed as Vice-President, Medical and Academic Affairs at SickKids in 2010 and in September 2012 he was named the inaugural Chief of the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health. His current research focuses on delivery science to enhance the implementation of public health programs and products. Zlotkin also is a Professor in the Department of Paediatrics, the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Toronto.
