Product recall alert: Abbott-brand nutritional formulas recalled, changes implemented at SickKids
Summary:
On Oct. 15, 2018, Abbott Nutrition recalled a variety of their canned medical nutritional formulas, including, but not limited to, Pediasure and Osmolite, due to possible bacterial contamination. SickKids -- alongside distributors, retailers, other hospitals and nursing homes -- immediately removed all canned Abbott stock and has since been providing alternative formulas.
On Oct. 15, 2018, Abbott Nutrition recalled a variety of their canned medical nutritional formulas, including, but not limited to, Pediasure and Osmolite, due to possible bacterial contamination. According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, there has been a reported illness associated with the consumption of these products.
SickKids -- alongside distributors, retailers, other hospitals and nursing homes -- immediately removed all canned Abbott stock and has since been providing alternative formulas. We continue to carry Abbott’s Ensure in bottles/tetras, which have not been recalled. We continue to closely monitor the situation.
SickKids’ Shoppers Drug Mart and the Specialty Food Shop also immediately followed their product recall procedures and removed all recalled Abbott-brand stock. They now offer alternative formula options for families and other customers.
There are no reported illnesses with any patients at SickKids as a result of these recalled products at this time.
