Discovery Dialogues series goes behind-the-scenes of groundbreaking research discoveries

Summary:

Dr. Lorne Tyrell joins Dr. Stephen Scherer for the SickKids “Discovery Dialogues” series, taking attendees behind the scenes of groundbreaking research discoveries.

The “Discovery Dialogues” series takes attendees behind the scenes of groundbreaking research discoveries, bringing together our brightest minds to discuss their path to scientific discovery.  Hosted by Dr. Stephen Scherer, SickKids Chief of Research, events are livestreamed from the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning (PGCRL), the home of SickKids Research Institute, and designed to showcase research excellence at SickKids.

On November 16, 2022, Discovery Dialogues hosted special guest Dr. Lorne Tyrrell, Distinguished University Professor at the University of Alberta and founding director of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology, for a discussion about his pioneering work on the basic science and clinical development of new therapeutics for hepatitis B and his thoughts on scientific collaboration, trainee contributions, and much more. Tyrell delivered the Friesen Lecture at SickKids earlier in the day on the topic of "Contributions to Viral Hepatitis: Vaccine Task Force and COVID-19" as part of a visit organised by Friends of Canadian Institutes of Health Research (Friends of CIHR).

Recordings of the previous sessions are available on the SickKids YouTube channel. Previous panelists include Drs. Batsheva and Eitan Kerem on the discovery of the Cystic Fibrosis gene as well as Drs. Jayne Danska and Michael Taylor on what it takes to turn high-impact research into 'citation classics'.
