SickKids ranked one of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals for 2021

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) has once again been named one of Canada’s top research hospitals. SickKids has ranked first in both researcher intensity and hospital intensity among medium-sized hospitals on the Top 40 Research Hospitals list. For the eleventh consecutive year, SickKids holds a top spot among Canada’s leading research hospitals, overall ranked as Canada’s number-two research hospital for 2021.

"To be recognized as a top research hospital is a tremendous acknowledgement of the incredible talent of our researchers, staff and trainees who work tirelessly to tackle all aspects of child health research," says Dr. Stephen Scherer, Chief of Research at SickKids.

"In combination with being recently ranked the top paediatric health-care centre in the world, this achievement is further validation of the important investment that SickKids continues to make in research and clinical research that is improving care, policy and outcomes for children and youth."

SickKids has ranked first in hospital intensity (research spending as a percentage of total hospital spending) for the past six years and has topped the list four times for researcher intensity (research spending per researcher) among medium-sized hospitals. SickKids research spending increased by 11 per cent, landing it in the tenth spot by growth. 

SickKids Research Institute is home to over 2,000 researchers, staff and trainees who are contributing to ground-breaking research across seven different programs, including Cell Biology, Child Health Evaluative Sciences, Developmental & Stem Cell Biology, Genetics & Genome Biology, Molecular Medicine, Neurosciences & Mental Health and Translational Medicine.
