Biography
Dr. Martin Offringa received academic training at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands (PhD, clinical epidemiology), and clinical training at The Sophia Children’s Hospital and Emma Children’s Hospital in Rotterdam and Amsterdam, respectively. He was the Director of the Dutch Cochrane Centre, founding director of the Netherlands Medicines for Children Research Network, and Program Head of Child Health Evaluative Sciences at SickKids Research Institute (RI) for 7 years. Since 2009, he chairs the Steering Group of StaR Child Health, an international initiative that aims to enhance the design, conduct and reporting of clinical trials in children.
Dr. Offringa is a Professor of Paediatrics and Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. He is also a Scholar at the Cundill Centre for Child and Youth Depression.
Research
Dr. Offringa’s work at the EnRICH Research Group and Network aims to enhance child health through the discovery of innovative methods that will transform the way we design, conduct and report child health clinical research. To provide global solutions to methodological problems in pediatric research, EnRICH is engaged in a number of local and (inter)national initiatives including Toronto Outcomes Research in Child Health (TORCH), PRISMA-COSMIN, SPOR Innovative Pediatric Clinical Trials (IPCT), SPOR INFORM RARE, CHEER (Canadian Collaboration for Child Health: Efficiency and Excellence in the Ethics Review of Research), Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials –Children (CONSORT-C), Standard Protocol Items for Randomized Trials – Children (SPIRIT-C). In addition to these initiatives the EnRICH program offers training opportunities in the form of a course on Innovative Trial Design, postdoctoral fellowships and summer student projects in clinical research methodology.
